We might think that these ads are just created to sell their products and that they are a profitable positive thing; yet, ads create a lot of damage to society. In fact, ads may be more detrimental to society than beneficial. It conveys many negative messages to society and encourages sexualization, violence, but most important, it alters the perception of beauty in women.
These ads only show perfect women--something unattainable for the majority of people.
Besides, magazines and most of the ads airbrush the photographs and use Photoshop to alter them. Taking the into account, women are brainwashed with pictures of unreal bodies making them focus only on their negative parts.
For instance, the other day I was watching a VS Pink ad and I got so sad because my body did not look like that. The model in the ad has much more boobs than I and has a better and bigger butt than mine.
With ads like this all over the world, women girls learn from an early age the meaning of beauty. They grow up thinking that beautiful is what ads show them. This means that to be pretty one needs to be skinny, flawless, have big breasts, cute faces, etc. Both children and teenagers are being overwhelmed by society’s portrayal of beauty.
The truth is that companies make money when women feel terrible about themselves--that is why they buy all the make up and invest of liposuction, breast implants and all those things.
And sine ads advertise perfection, they are basically telling us that happiness and success comes with beauty. With this in mind, women want to be like the people in the ads--women want a perfect photoshoped body which is almost impossible to obtain. This creates low self esteem, eating disorders, among others.
Because of media, especially ads, girls learn to hate their bodies starting from an early age.
